A Shopify product page checklist for agency builds

Key takeaways

  • The product page is where a store wins or loses the sale; check it before launch, template by template.
  • Cover images, variants, price and availability, shipping and returns, trust, speed and structured data.
  • Test every variant type, on mobile first, and place an order yourself.
  • Prefer built-in theme features over apps where they do the job; each app adds scripts and maintenance.

A client’s store can have a beautiful home page and still lose sales on the product page. It is the page where a visitor decides, and small problems there, a missing size guide, a slow image, an unclear delivery time, cost more than anything on the home page. This is the checklist we run before a custom Shopify theme goes to the client.

1. Images

  • The first image shows the product clearly, on mobile as well as desktop, and loads quickly. web.dev’s guide on LCP optimisation explains why the main image matters.
  • Image dimensions are set so the page does not jump while loading.
  • Variants with different looks, such as colours, switch to matching images.
  • Alt text describes the product, not the file name.

Run through the checklist with the client on a call so they see the page as a customer does.

2. Variants and options

  • Every variant combination can be selected and added to the cart.
  • Unavailable combinations are clear before the customer clicks.
  • The price updates when the variant changes, and any “from” pricing makes sense.
  • Option names are plain: “Size”, not “Option 1”.

3. Price, availability and the buy button

  • Price, compare-at price and any sale label are consistent.
  • Stock status is accurate: in stock, low stock, sold out or back-in-stock sign-up.
  • The add-to-cart button is visible without scrolling on a typical phone and gives clear feedback when pressed.

4. Information that removes doubt

  • Shipping: cost and time expectations are visible near the button, not only at checkout.
  • Returns: a short statement and a link to the full policy.
  • Product details: materials, dimensions, care or specifications in a scannable layout rather than one block of text.
  • Size or fit help: a guide where it matters.
Tip: Read the page as if you had never seen the brand. If you would hesitate before paying, so will a customer, and the fix is usually a sentence of clear information.

5. Trust and social proof

  • Reviews appear only if the client has real ones, and come from an app or feature they own and pay for; see who pays for Shopify apps.
  • Payment and security cues are consistent with the checkout.
  • Contact details are easy to find.

6. Speed

  • Test the product page on mobile before and after adding apps. Shopify’s own performance guidance lists the main causes of slow themes.
  • Lazy-load images below the fold, but not the main product image; see web.dev on browser-level lazy loading.
  • Remove scripts from apps the store no longer uses.

7. Search and structured data

  • Each product has a unique title and description written for people, not pasted from a supplier.
  • Check whether the theme outputs product structured data and that the values are correct. Google’s guide to product structured data explains what is expected.
Watch out: Do not add structured data that does not match what the page shows, such as ratings the store does not have. It can cause errors and loses trust.

Area Check Done
Images Main image fast, sized, with alt text
Variants All combinations add to cart
Price and stock Accurate and consistent
Information Shipping, returns, details visible
Trust Real reviews only, contact easy to find
Speed Mobile test saved as baseline
Structured data Present and correct
Test order Placed on mobile and desktop
Laptop screen displaying a group of people on a video call
Before launch, a short review call with the agency and client catches the issues a solo check misses.

Before you hand over

Place a real test order, check the confirmation email and note what you changed. Then work through our Shopify theme handoff checklist, and scope the store so product page work is not a surprise in the quote.

How we build product pages

Our Shopify builds are custom-coded themes made from your design direction, under your brand; see white label Shopify development, the white label Shopify agency page and how we work. To talk through a store, get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

How many product images should a page have?
Enough to show the product from the angles a buyer cares about. There is no magic number; test with real customers.
Do I need an app for reviews?
Often, yes, but only if the store has real reviews to show. Check the app’s current pricing and the effect on speed.
Should shipping information be on the product page?
Yes. Customers who find delivery costs only at checkout are more likely to leave.
Can the theme replace some apps?
Yes, for simple needs such as size guides or announcement bars. Specialist needs like subscriptions are better handled by an app.
